Like many other adults in this country, most homosexuals interested in having children through the process of adoption, foster care, or artificial insemination, are involved in stable, committed relationships. However, because these relationships are not legally noticed, it is made almost impossible for homosexual couples to adopt children. While considering the different factors that compose the reasoning for this bias against gay men and lesbians, it is predominantly important to look in-depth at the actual adoption process, and what exact laws refrain these individuals from adopting children in the United States today.
The process of adoption can be seen as the most permanent way to become a non-biological parent. Adoption is best defined as the legal proceeding which establishes the legal relationship of parent and child between persons not already so related. Two basic requirements for someone trying to adopt are age and residence. The most commonly encountered age requirement is that the adopting parent be at least 21 years of age.
