The reporting of the war news attempted to put a positive spin on every negative story. All negative stories conveyed the same message that, the men who died were giving the ultimate sacrifice and thus were used to re-enforce the need of both the armed and civilian population to continue on the war.
Newspapers were used as a propaganda tool to influence the Canadian population.
WeakNesses
As could be expected from wartime newspapers, a weakness in their historical importance is the racism undertones that flow through many of the articles. Wartime newspapers sought patriotism and nationalism while trying to convey consistent negative image of Germany. Newspapers are weak as a resource as they convey a story, designed to illicit reactions from readers. The Germans are not, nor would any enemy nation during wartime be regarded favorably by the Canadian media.
