In 1793, King Louis XVI and his wife were executed for trying to escape to Austria. Robespierre and Jacobins took over the government and began the Reign of Terror. To stop the Reign of Terror, the royalist in France allowed British force to enter, and aid them. British fought the French Army in the city of Toulon and wounded the there artillery commander. Several French attacks failed to take back the city. Thus, Napoleon was put in charge of the army that went to battle with the British force. His tactics and strategies force the British out to the Toulon and back into French Power. His victory over the British earned him the rank of Brigadier General. Soon after he was promoted to the Army General in charge of the Italian Army.
In1794, Robespierre was executed and as the supporter of Jacobins, Napoleon was sent to prison. But through his personal connection he was soon released from the prison.
