The members of the Religious Improvement Society believe they were doing God’s work. In April 1809, their gathering place was chosen to serve as a beacon of the hope in Christ. One year later, they had managed to raise over $ 100,000 to complete the construction of our current meetinghouse.
Peter Banner, a British architect living in Boston, was in charge of the construction of the edification; Benajah became the chief mason, and Solomon Willards the woodcarver. The construction work began in mid-April with the dismantling of the Old Granary Building of 1728 in which the sails for the U.S.S. Constitution were sewn.
