I believe that there are several things worth of notice in Zinn’s texts. One of them is the very insightful perspective Zinn has on Law and Justice. At one point of the text he poses a question that left me thinking: where is our greater obligation, to law or to justice? I strongly feel that our “obligation” is both to law and to justice with responsibility, being aware of the outcomes of our actions. Justice and law should always be together.
Although I think that law and justice should be together, I also feel that sometimes it’s imminent to break the law in order to achieve justice. Sometimes the legal system needs to be adapted to current times. Due to the great deal of interests of big companies, members of the government, and the innate bureaucracy of the system, the legal system does not progress into a more comprehensive one. This is why sometimes the law needs to be broken in order to achieve justice.
When the law is broken, there are certain elements that are inevitable to see. Here comes Zinn’s biggest questioning based on the weight obedience and disobedience has on law and justice. Zinn says, “…absolute obedience to all laws will violate justice and sooner or later lead to enormous disorder.” I couldn’t agree more with his statement.
Among other things, Zinn gives a very sensible view of law and justice. He supports his statements with historical facts that lead us to misery or freedom by means of obedience or disobedience....
