These theories deserve a great deal of research and attention because they are what a vast majority of Africans believe in. We will not have success in preventing AIDS in Africa without an understanding of these theories and the mindset of the Africans.
One theory contributing to the dangerous denial felt by many Africans is that HIV does not lead to AIDS. Professor Peter Duesberg introduced the world to the theory that HIV does not cause AIDS in 1987. His ideas were rejected by most scientists, but attracted a great deal of attention in the mainstream and gained respect in many different social and ethnic groups. There are many reasons why people readily believe myths or theories about this particular disease. The base of these reasons, in general is denial. However the Africans have more reason than most to believe that the Western world is trying to trick or harm them. To many Africans the issue of AIDS is much more political than medical. Millions of Africans have long memories of Western evils such as slavery, colonial exploitation, Cold War proxy battles and biological warfare tests carried out by more powerful regimes in their homeland.
