Since the first emergence of drugs, teenagers have searched for a new type of drugthat will enable them to reach a new ‘high’, so let's imagine having a drugthat is fun and harmless. Is there such a thing? Most teenagers and collegestudents seem to think that they found the answer with ecstasy; however,recently the side effects of the drug have made teenagers realize that it'sharmful and even deadly. What teenagers do not realize it are the chemical dependency,mental stability that the drug attributes, and the ways it can wreck a person’slife.
Somany people have begun to use the drug that according to the DEA, it estimatesthat over two million pills of ecstasy is illegally brought into the U.S. weeklyin New York, New Jersey, and Newark. It also reports that over 750,000 dosagesare taken each week. Ecstasy, the popular drug of abuse has many differentnames. Some of them are, MDMA (3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine), XTC, X,Adam, Bean, E, M, and Roll. It is anartificial drug that carries different chemicals that contain “hallucinogenicproperties”. Discovered by a German company in 1912, ecstasy started to becomepopular in the 1960’s and 1970s. As the “party drug” exploded in clubs, partiesand other social gatherings, more and more teenagers and young adults begantaking the small pill. It was mostoften used in these places because it controlled the need to sleep, eat, ordrink. Letting users to keep on partying for two to three day’s non-stop. Theeffect of ecstasy last about four to six hours and creates relaxation, lessanxiety, and positive feelings. Even though it is not as addictive as crack,cocaine, heroin, or other drugs it can still have effects which includevomiting, hallucinations, chills, fevers, muscle cramping, tremors, depression,and paranoia.
