America’s Failing Diet
It has become painfully evident that a silent killer has crept its way into the lives
of Americans, and is claiming lives faster than any terrorist can hope to. We have
poisoned ourselves over the years with food made by companies whose goal is to make
gross amounts of money, no matter what the means. I must extend my congratulations to
these companies, for they have succeeded in a most clever manner. America is rushing
toward a waterfall of death, it is almost imminent that my generation will lower the life
expectancy by a catastrophic amount.
If you are unaware of what the American diet is, just look at the amount of cars
lined up for the drive-thru at your local McDonalds, Wendys, Burger King, Taco Bell,
etc. Or go out to any public place and observe the number of people that look as though
they are wearing car tires around their wastes and under their clothes. Americans are
consuming more fat, cholesterol and sugar than ever before in our history. According to
government and private sector studies, 65% of American adults are overweight. This is
the largest it has even been in our 228 year history. It is also the greatest percentage in the
world. The greed of corporate America, combined with the wasteful and “there is always
enough” mentality that grips the minds of Americans like a noose, are the factors that
account for our destructful behaviors. Combined with smoking, stressful jobs and the lack
of exercise, our future looks very bleak and unfavorable.
So what exactly does that quarter pounder with cheese do to our bodies? I feel
fine after I eat it, so why should I worry? These questions have slammed my ears for
years and no matter how many times I answer them, my peers continue to gobble down
that spicy burrito or a double whopper with cheese as though it was their last. The
