Studies show that suicide is the third leading cause of death for teenagers. Nearly every community will experience a completed teen suicide at sometime because the rate among 15-19 year olds is 10 per 100000. This article provides information on suicide as it impacts the school. Pediatricians sometimes are asked to consult to schools to aid the teens after a completed suicide. They also will be able to provide accurate information and care for the adolescents.

Statistics show suicide being ranked the second leading cause of death. There is no single factor of suicide, but there are four factors that have demonstrated suicidal behaviors. They are broken homes, a family history of psychiatric difficulties, family suicidal behavior and childhood maltreatment. School counselors are in a good position to address suicide because of their accessibility to the teenager population. The National Institute of Mental Health reported that children under 18 years of age found that more than 81532 teens were recent recipients of psychiatric help.
