“Starting Early: Underage consumers”
In reading “Starting Early,” A saw some things I agreed with and other things I completely disagreed with. First of all, I am fully aware of the rapid obesity rate in America but I don’t think it is fair to blame that rate all of fast food chains and other food companies. I do feel that they need to have some of the blame but not as much as this chapter made it out to have. I think one of the major factors of obesity is the child’s parents. When a child is younger, the parents have complete control over what there child is eating and the nutrition they consume. I feel that if parents allow their children to eat bad foods all of the time and their used to it, then that’s what their going to crave and want to eat. On the other hand, if parents cooked home-cooked meals and buy nutritional foods so that their children have to eat healthy, then they want be so prone to go out and get un-nutritional foods.
Secondly, I do agree with the fact that marketers do tend to make commercials appealing more to children. It makes kids want to eat at that cool place they saw on television or in a magazine, but again I feel that a parent has a control over that. When a child gets to be a teenager, they tend to do more without their parents and usually eat more bad foods, but that’s their choice. In my opinion, people can eat whatever they want if it is done in moderation. It’s impossible to just blame fast food chains and commercials for the large rate of obesity in the world. They are merely trying to sell their product and make money to live on. Who we can blame are the obese victims themselves. They can make themselves not eat as much and lose a little bit of weight just like the rest of us have to do. There are plenty of low-fat and fat-free foods on the market that are easily bought at a local grocery store. There are also lots of sugar free foods sold today that taste j...
