“Assisted Suicide”
Assisted Suicide was a big issue in my family about one year ago this January. My grandfather was sick for several years, he had a heart transplant, vein replacements, you know, the whole nine yards. You name it, he had it done. He was a strong man and came out feeling pretty well through all of his operations, until this one night. He went to the hospital because he was having a pain in his heart. Comes to find out there was a blood clot in his leg. My family was given the choice on either to have his leg amputated or else he would probably pass that night. So, after a long serious drawn out conversation in the waiting room, we decided to give it a go. Well, we did so- and he wasn’t feeling so well after the operation was finished, even though he did come out alive, which, in any case is always a plus. After my grandfathers operation was complete he had another blood clot in the other leg, not to mention my grandfather was only 64 years of age. This other blood clot brought the attention on amputation of the other leg, this time is left. So, that same night, early morning, the operation went through, he came out, we stood by his side and we could all see very clearly that he wasn’t feeling so well, and he couldn’t bare to look down to see what had happened. The doctors said that he would be fine and would be able to go home in a week or so. So, we all said ‘goodbye’ and headed in the direction of home. While on our way home, we got a call from the doctor, so- we headed back up to the hospital. He gave our family the choice on whether or not we ‘pulled’ the plug or not. Having such a major decision resting in five people’s hands was unbelievable. We all thought to ourselves, that this would not be the guy we knew and loved, my grandfather would be embarressed to go anywhere, and we knew that he would only have another problem down the road.
