Even though gambling and lottery do indeed have negative aspect the positives it brings to the state far exceed the negatives. Utah’s very conservative views have made it one of the only states in the country to not have a form of state lottery. While most of Utah’s officials would agree that lottery would only bring bad things to this very wholesome state they are not totally accurate in stating that. State lottery can bring many beneficial things to a state such as funding. The addition of a state lottery system to Utah will drastically help Utah solve some of its problems.
Currently Utah’s government apposes a state lottery because it is considered immoral by the dominant religion. Even though that this is the case it seems that if a state lottery could bring much needed money to a state that is dealing with a budget crisis why does the government have to be so picky. Even though that these government officials think that a lottery is immoral many of Utah’s residents are taking the short drive north across the border to Idaho. Idaho has a state lottery and it funds their public schools system. Currently Utah residents are driving to Idaho to purchase lottery tickets and it is benefiting Idaho’s state economy in every way. “The LDS Church is determined to protect us from corruption by not allowing a lottery into Utah. However, thousands of Utahans go outside the state (with hard earned Utah money) to benefit Idaho.” (Bisping) Since this quote was published in Utah’s local paper, The Salt Lake Tribune, it seems that many people are aware that Utah’s residents are supporting other states. Why has the government not realized that not everyone living in Utah thinks that lottery is immoral? The government is too picky in choosing which programs fund their budget.
