“ The collision of forces at places with names like Antietam and Gettysburg was
merely the epiphenomenon of an ongoing struggle, born in Patrick Henry’s resistance
and nurtured in the sibling rivalry between amendments 9 and 10,” is a valid statement
because there were many economical, and political differences between the North and
South. Because of these differences, provincialism was growing stronger. This hapless
war was started because of many years of struggle between the North and South.
The North and South were established on different economical criterions. The
North was more of an industrial region where factories were a common means of
production. The South were rural states, which hinged on agriculture as a means of
production rather than industrialization. Since the South did not have many factories
manufactured goods brought in more revenue than did cotton, the South’s main product.
The North seemed threatened that the slavery-based economy of the South was going to
affect their economy, even though “ three out of every four Southerners didn’t own
slaves. . . ” Many plantation owners depended on slaves. They were accustomed to this
way of life. “ Slavery was their way of making a living.”
The South felt that their political power was slowly creeping away. They believed
in more state power and less governmental control, while the North believed in a
centralized government. The South wanted the right to govern themselves. The
westward expansion of the country helped politically. If any of the new states entering
the Union became slave states that would mean more representation in Congress for the
South. If there were more non- slave states then there would be more Northern
representation in Congress.
The South was in desperate need of foreign intervention and asked Britain and
France for help....
