Is Gun Control Good?
The second amendment of the United States Bill of Rights says, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” (Bill of Rights) Lately it seems every politician and their mothers have made arguments that gun control is a necessary thing. Gun control is a touchy issue with most Americans, either you are for it or against it, there doesn’t seem to be any middle ground. Groups like the national rifle association (NRA) are fighting for our right to bear arms everyday while many political figures and conservatives are opposed to guns. That much is true, but do’s that mean that a guy wanting to protect his family in this day and age shouldn’t be able to use a gun to do it. For example, in 1985 the National Institute for Justice reported that 60% of felons polled agreed that “ a criminal is not going to mess around with a victim he knows is armed with a gun.” Think about this realistically, would you rather take a wallet from some chump who has nothing but his good looks to protect him or mess with the guy next to him who happens to carry a 357 magnum? Most people would probably pick the good-looking guy. This study also looked at a place called Kennesaw Georgia, in 1982 this suburb passed a law requiring heads of households to
keep at least one weapon in the house. The residential burglary rate dropped 89% in Kennesaw, compared to the 10.4% drop in Georgia as a whole. (Reasons to own a firearm) Obviously criminals don’t like it very much if their victims are armed.
