This was formed to keep conditions in he factories better for workers. The center organizers of this union were Lenin and Yuly Martov who would later become one of Lenin’s greatest rivals. The Union did not last long. The state police arrested Lenin and Martov shortly after the union was formed. After serving fifteen months in prison, Lenin was sentenced to three years of exile.
Lenin’s exile ended in 1900 at which time he moved to Switzerland and then later moved to Munich, Germany. While there Lenin became one of the editors of the newspaper Iskra (The Spark), first published in Munich in December 1900. The newspapers goal was to bring back the Marxists scattered though out Europe, and to focus them on preparing to overthrow the Imperial Government.
In 1902, Lenin published a pamphlet in which he argued that a party of professional revolutionaries should lead the revolution. Lenin entitled this pamphlet “What Is To Be Done”
In 1904, while Lenin was still living abroad, he established himself as the unofficial leader of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party. Since he was out of the country, he was dependent upon intermediaries to provide him with information on developments in Russia. Lenin was also busy during this period working on Iskra and a second newspaper titled Vperyod (Forward)
In November of that 1905, the emperor declared amnesty for all political exiles. Lenin returned to Russia but did not play a significant role in the revolution.
In April of 1906 members of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party met in Stockholm, Sweden, for the Fourth Party Congress. At that meeting, the RSDLP voted to support the elections to the Duma. The Duma was a popularly elected legislative assembly. Lenin opposed this resolution. He demanded a complete overthrow of the government.
In December 1907, Lenin again left Russia. He settled first in Geneva, Switzerland and then in Paris. At the same time, the Bols...
