What is “pop” culture? Pop culture means many different things for each decade. It could be tight rolled jeans, friendship bracelets, tye-dye t-shirts, disco, go-go boots, rap, hard rock, big hair, the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Brittany Spears, ‘NSYNC, or Who Wants to be a Millionaire. These are just a few of the different societal trends, television shows and music sensations regarding different pop culture topics that have changed over the years. There are so many different trends that have come and gone throughout the years, and at one time they were all considered to be pop culture. Some stuff has stuck around and others, well no one really wants to remember anymore. There were and still are, different clothing styles, music preferences and television shows that people considered to be the pop culture of their time. A lot of the things that were popular in the past are now fads that have come and gone, and the stuff that is considered pop culture today will probably do the same.

Back in the 60’s there were the tye-dye t-shirts, bell-bottom jeans and love beads. Everyone wanted to be considered “cool” and “hip” so they wore all of these different styles to fit in. Everyone wanted to look different from his or her parents and be individual, when everyone just ended up looking the same. New kinds of music started to emerge during this time. There was a wide variety of music from the Beetles to Jimmy Hendrix. People started watching shows like Happy Days and the Sonny and Cher specials. They started protesting war and any other cause they could think of and started wearing friendship bracelets. This is what the sixties were all about. This was the “pop” culture of the time. Some things faded away, others came back and some stuff stuck around until now.
