My Fair Lady
It is a noteworthy classic film. I have already watched it in my girlhood. My impression of this film was merely the beauty of Eliza and the wide age range between the make and female protagonist. To my delight, I could have the second chance to watch it in class again. This time, I found something worth pondering and discussing.
At that time, people in low social class were often despised. People with higher social status or wealth would somewhat look down upon them. In the film, they refused to buy Eliza’s flowers and even talk to her. Also, that can be proved by doctor Higgins’s behavior toward Eliza. He mentioned that people like her devaluate the holy buildings and teased about the poor pronunciation of Eliza. I think that was unfair. After all, no one would be willing to born to a destitute family with low class background. Those rich people had no difference than poor people despite wealth and prestige. Everyone has his or her self-esteem and deserves the right to be respected and treated fairly. However, there are still some people of high social status who had great sympathy and were willing to hive those in need a helping hand. That can be proved in the film. The colonel and doctor Higgins’s mother were good examples. They had pity for Eliza and tried their best to help her. Unlike doctor Higgins, they often show concern for Eliza.
On the one hand, I think doctor Higgins was very selfish and inconsiderate he only cared about his own bet and regarded Eliza as nobody or even a tool for him to prove his capability. On the other hand, I think that maybe it was because that he too blunt when it came to expressing his feelings. After all, women tend to be more sentimental and emotional. Also, he did not want to admit that he liked Eliza because he already mentioned to the colonel that women were trouble and he did need their company at all.
