Is Grease The Word?

Grease is more then just the word. Grease is a powerful Musical. It is classified as such with it’s intense musical realities, use of props, stage setting and character likeness. Throughout the movie we are faced with the ups and downs of a high school life. The scenes are set up to tell a story and with the addition of props or special lighting and extras we get a new story depicted in song. The characters of Grease seem real to the audience and offer some striking similarities to actors in other musicals. Even though Grease is without a doubt a Musical it also falls into the category of romantic comedy. This is shown in the many faces of the lovebirds, including all shown aspects of their lives. The characters are average middle-class citizens showing the hysterical sides to falling in love. Grease is the word, it’s got “groove” it’s got meaning!
Musicals have their own realities, they don’t usually follow normal standards. In Grease you see that the kids are in their senior year of high school and living it up, that’s pretty normal. But I have never seen a whole school break into song about their summer. If you search for more meaning in the words and surroundings you notice that the movie shares two distinct realities. The same old day to day routine of a young adult and the dream-like (un)reality of flying cars and beauty school dropouts. The distinct difference in a musical and any other type of movie with songs is the ability to transition smoothly out of the narrative action into the musical number and back into the narrative. During the scene where Danny and the T-birds are fixing up the beater car “Grease Lightning” they go from normal everyday conversation into a song about a “too good to be true” car, that they are imagining, never once does the film make you question their sense of reality as you can see by how quickly they go back to fixing that beater car and never mention t...
