The Law of Variation
“It’s like I’m living in a gallery!” Life is like a gallery through the eyes of the Matthew Sweeney, because each person you see in life is different from the other. It is only natural for people to be different from each other; it is stated in Charles Darwin’s law of variation that all species will be varied in order to survive changes in the environment. Darwin’s law gives evidence that all humans will vary from each other and the same goes for characters in movie or stories. The characters Matthew Poncelet and Sister Helen Prejean (Dead Man Walking), Homer Wells (Cider House Rules) and Tessie Hutchinson (The Lottery), are three prominent examples of individuals that stand out and attract the attention of others.
In the film Dead Man Walking we are exposed to Matthew Poncelet and Sister Helen Prejean, these two characters each have different believes of life and follow different paths from each other; yet their paths connect in the end. Matthew Poncelet is criminal that society would never forgive; he did a horrible thing. Because he had to be executed, Sister Helen Prejean came to his aid. The variation in Poncelet is apparent when he is foiled with Helen Prejean, who is a nun of pure heart, while he is a criminal with many sins. At first he wouldn’t accept god and wouldn’t admit to his crime; but as his execution drew near, he tried harder to accept god. Though he was reluctant at first, the pressure caused him to adapt to his situation and be freed from guilt.
Cider House Rules directed by Lasse Hallström is a tale about a man who is trying to find himself. Homer Wells lives most of his life in an orphanage as a doctor: though he longed to see what else the world had to offer him. He leaves to find many shocking and wonderful experiences all rapped around the idea of love.
