A True Love Story
John Q is a movie about a heroic man who stops at nothing to save the life of his only son. This story is about an average family who even though does not have that much money; they make it up with plenty of love. John Q Archibald worked at a local power plant where he only worked 20 hours a week. His wife Denise Archibald, who just started a new job when what they knew as life had been abruptly turned upside down. While at a local little league baseball game their son Mikey, collapsed. He was stealing base when the first sign of heart failure occurred.
They rushed Mikey to the hospital, when they learned his heart was three times the size for a nine year old. There were two options for this situation; the family could choose to have a heart transplant. The transplant itself was explained to be a high risk procedure, even life threatening. The other option was to prepare for death. The director of the hospital suggested they begin to accept that their son would die soon, and just make the best of the time they have left. Without the operation Mikey’s heart would become fatigue. The doctor explained that he would sleep more and more, and one day he would fall asleep and never wake. With that news John and his wife suggested that they operate on their son. He believed that since he had insurance it would cover everything. The director of the hospital explained that his insurance did not cover a procedure of such magnitude, and since they had no stocks or bonds, and didn’t own their home they would have to pay 75, 000 dollar in cash. Leaving the hospital with their hearts broken, and no knowledge of their next move, or what the future had in store, they
were approached by a nurse, who suggested they talk to Human Resource center, children medicaid, and other insurance companies about their situation. She suggested they should be aggressive and not take no for an answer.
