“Pixar has created six of the most successful and beloved animated films of all time: Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Pixar has won 16 Academy Awards®, and its six films have grossed more than $3.2 billion at the worldwide box office to date” (James). So why are Pixar films so popular? What is it that attracts moviegoers to see these films? There are three reasons why Pixar films are so popular: great animation, relatable characters, and the ability to appeal to a wide audience.
Pixar films are known for state-of-the-art animation and graphics. The animation is superior to any other studio. This reputation for superior animation and graphics is what brings in the money. I remember seeing Toy Story for the first time. I was about ten years old. I was almost convinced that the backdrop was real and not animated. The graphics were so sharp that I had trouble telling if the whole movie was animated or if Pixar used a mix of animation and live-action props. After a few minutes, I realized that the whole movie was, in fact, animated. I remember being awe-struck throughout the entire movie; simply amazed that an animated movie could be completely three-dimensional. Before Toy Story, I had never seen animation like it. I was used to watching flat characters interact on a flat backdrop. Don’t get me wrong. The cartoons before Toy Story were completely entertaining; well, certain ones were. However, this new type of animation was extraordinary and far more superior to the traditional two-dimensional cartoons I was used to watching. After enjoying the astounding animation from Toy Story, I knew Pixar’s follow-up films would be made with even better animation and graphics.
