Alexander the Great, Alexander not Great!


Run, if for no other reason than for fear of boredom alone. Bottom tingling, eyes heavy, ready to fall asleep, those were my thoughts as I painfully sat through Alexander. The high price I paid for my torture was the only reason I stayed in my chair. Alexander is drawn out and seems more intent on showing his lifestyle rather than his life achievements. Furthermore, this movie does not do Alexander the Great justice and it takes away from the interesting historical story of an extraordinary military leader. This movie has got to be one of the gayest movies ever made; while including plenty of attractive actors all gazing at each other.
Even with such an audacious cast this movie is still terrible. Alexander is played by the attractive, Colin Farrell; his mother, Olympias is played by the striking but unusual Angelina Jolie, who never seems to age even though we see her through out the entire 30 years of Alexander’s life. His father, King Phillip, is played by none other than “Ice Man”, (Tom Cruise’s rival in Top Gun), himself Val Kilmer. Anthony Hopkins plays the role of Ptolemy, Alexander’s former advisor; Hopkins gets the movie rolling at its snail pace by telling Alexander’s story to his scribe and the audience. Jared Leto plays Alexander’s best friend and lover Hephaestion. Despite the fact that Farrell and Leto were hot Hollywood sex symbols watching them longing for each other ruined their sex appeal. Their mutual attraction and desire for each other made my stomach churn.
Historically Alexander was a fierce and triumphant leader who conquered immense amounts of territory. Although I am not a huge fan of gruesome, bloody battle scenes I still felt that this movie was missing a multitude of manly combat.
