In the movie, Thirteen, the two main teenage characters really showed a brief aspect of what many teens around that age go through today. Tracy and Evie were very different from each other in the beginning but the movie shows how they grew very close and were heading in the wrong direction.
Tracy was a “good girl” who was into her school work and her family. Her parents were divorced so she lived with her mother and her father really did not play a role in her life. Although she seemed okay with her life, she started to take a turn for the worst. The “social scene” at Tracy’s high school can be very cruel and frustrating if you are not in the popular crew. It is obvious that Tracy was having a rough time fitting in and she was willing to do whatever it took to change her status. This is what caused her to approach Evie.
Evie was the total opposite of Tracy. She was everything Tracy wished she could be. Evie was popular, pretty, stylish, and seemed to get everybody’s attention. Although it seemed as if she had everything, she really did not have anything. Unlike Tracy, Evie had no parents in her life. She lived with an aunt who could barely take care of herself. Evie had such an influence on Tracy that she used Tracy for whatever she needed. She knew exactly what she was doing from the beginning. She had Tracy wrapped around her finger.
When Tracy and Evie started to hang out they immediately engaged in illegal and self-destructive behavior. They were stealing from stores and people, smoking drugs, drinking, and engaging in unprotected sexual activities. Tracy was also being very disrespectful and rebellious towards her mother, as well as her family. They were skipping school and failing their classes.
