The Real World Past and Present
One of the first and successful reality shows on TV that proved to be a cultural, racial,
sexual and eye catching series is the MTV’s ‘The Real World’. “Ten years ago a group of seven
strangers met in a New York loft and started to bicker. Now all of television is trying to follow
in MTV’s voyeuristic steps” (Peyser). This show started out as just an experiment and turned out
to be one of the most watched TV shows in America. Throughout the 15 seasons it has changed
a great deal, mostly adding sexual and diverse problems to each of the houses. The Real World
is about seven strangers that are picked to live in a house for over a six month period. “The Real
World is episodic, depicting for thirty minutes each week the struggles, challenges, and general
dynamics occurring between seven cast member over a six month period” (Negotiating Claims).
The Real World has changed into a more spicy, thrilling and must see series since the first
episode. Looking at the very first season and then looking at the current season you are able to
tell why it has become such a well-known reality show. The reason for all these changes is to
show what people are really like behind the scenes. MTV gives the viewers something to relate
to about their real life problems. Changing different features to make it a must see show is the
reason ‘The Real World’ is on top.
The first season was taped in a loft in New York City. Since this was the first episode, it
started a new genre for reality television shows. The seven strangers were Andre, Becky, Eric,
Heather B, Julie, Kevin, and Norman. The first episode offers a diversity between the seven
