Born on the 4th of July was a biography of Ron Kovic and shows all the changes in which he and many other soldiers went through before, during and after the war. Too many young men like Ron, when they signed up for the war they did not realize what it completely entailed. Ron and many others went through drastic changes in their life and this is shown throughout the movie.
The first scene is the opening, one which many of us today are familiar with; a 4th of July Parade. These parades were filled with patriotism and pride for one’s country. War heroes were honored and admired as the paraded down the streets with all the town’s people cheering them on. Kids were often dressed up like soldiers from all the different branches of the military, and were referred to as Yankee Doodle boys. These parades were happy memories that Ron shared with his family. Unfortunately when it is time for Ron to be the one to parade down the street, the parades have taken a different turn. As he paraded down the streets the people of his town no longer looked up to or admired the war veterans, but they spit on him and yelled at him. Overall the crowd appears to not be the happy crowd that Ron remembers being a part of. Ron himself now jumps at the firecrackers which remind him of gun shots. Even when the town tries to welcome him home, he cannot find the words and quickly leaves, for he knows that the people of his town are not proud of him.
The next scene is when the young boys are playing war. When Ron and his friends were growing up war and war heroes were glorified and the kids did just that by mimicking them. They did not take it seriously, for instance when Ron is shot playing they argue if he is dead or not. This seems to say that they did not fully understand all the aspects and the seriousness of war.
