In creating the myth, the author wrote that the most successful films are based on “search” or “myth” stories. The film, Pirates of the Caribbean, echoes her statement. According to Seger, a myth is a story that is “more than true”, because it is lived by all of us, at some levels, connects, and speaks to us all. Just like Captain Jack Sparrow, the swashbuckling pirate. Growing up as a kid, I pretended countless times to be Jack Sparrow, wielding my sword made of wood and dressed up in a pirate’s garb. All of the kids in the neighborhood always wanted to be Captain Jack and dreaded playing the role of the hated Captain Barbossa. The film is successful because everyone can relate with Captain Jack Sparrow, with pirates and ships because it reminds everyone about their childhood fantasies.
According to Seger, a myth can have many variations. Seger pointed out that in most hero stories, the hero is an ordinary person. Then an incident enters the hero’s life, which serves as a catalyst that sets the story in motion. One of the heroes in Pirate of the Caribbean is Will Turner, the ordinary blacksmith. He was pushed in the position to be the hero because the cursed Captain Barbarossa kidnapped his love, Elizabeth. The film is also a treasure myth as Captain Jack Sparrow, the other hero, is after the lost treasure that Barbossa and his men have hidden. As they sail the sea to rescue Elizabeth and find the treasure, Jack Sparrow enlisted the help of several crew workers who are outcasts. According to Seger, they are the helper that the hero receives to complete his journey.
Seger wrote that every hero story must face tests and obstacles to overcome the enemy and accomplish the hero’s goals.
