Coldplay’s Parachutes:
The Brits are Back

Once in a great while, an incredible album is released, and you cannot seem to understand what makes it so memorable. The perfectly chosen lyrics along with simple melodies express the emotions that one could only feel, not speak. An album that will not get old, and boring as time passes, but one that will help you grow. This is Parachutes, by Coldplay.
The London-based band consists of four members: a vocalist, bassist, guitarist and drummer. Most would recognize this genre of music as indie-rock, mixed with a little bit of mellow British pop. Though, to define the exact genre of this music in merely impossible, the music is remarkable. Coldplay is far from your English rock bands like Radiohead; they use the instrumental combination of guitar, bass, drums, and piano, along with vocals. Coldplay is unique, unlike any other band, and Parachutes reflects the very essence of their music.
Music is an expression of emotion. The lyrics in Parachutes use a lot of repetition of the same phrases; it lacks complexity. However, as some may see this as a weakness, the selection of a few simple words reflects more meaning and emotion into the purpose and message of the song. Throughout the album, the songs are relatively about everyday events in life. But, not all of the lyrics in Parachutes are given out, as plainspoken words; there is deeper meaning between the words. Or, some lyrics may just be a little silly, like those of “Yellow”, yet have that pop-sounding catchy beat to make the song more appealing to the listener.
Parachutes opens with “Don’t Panic”, a song about the beauty of life. This song is unlike the other tracks on the album because of the use of the instruments. The use of acoustic drums and the slow, mellow vocals are the basis of this song, and this unique combination is absolutely perfect.
