The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet

3 Pages 673 Words

“The Adventure’s of Ozzie and Harriet” was a television sitcom

shown in the 1950’s. The characters were Ozzie (father), Harriet (mother),

Ricky (oldest brother), and David (youngest brother). Although this

family seems perfect, nothing is ever perfect.

“Ozzie and Harriet” is an example of many things wrong with a

family sitcom. One of the things wrong with this show is its lack of

reality. People who watch “Ozzie and Harriet” feel that their own family

members should have the same relationship as this television family. Mr.

Curtis writes, “….they love to walk into rooms of the house and greet

each other. Scene after scene begins with: ‘Hi Mom. Hi, Pop’”. In a

normal family, we don’t greet each other every time we see each other.

We just might pass by each other without a thing to say. But according to

the show, the ideal family would say hello with a smile.

The show did have some problems that were not life changing but

Nelson family’s problems consisted of, Harriet’s decision to change her

hairstyle or Ozzy’s chance to spend time with his kids. These problems

seem petty in comparison with the social problems of that time. Despite

this show being a reality show, it doesn’t address any real world problems

of that time. During that time, there was oppression of women,

discrimination of minorities, domestic violence, sexual harassment, etc.

The family in the show, does not encounter any of these problems.

As Gregory Curtis writes:

“The plots, such as they are, often concern events or issues from the

daily life of the Nelson’s. Will Ozzie play ping-pong in the father

and son tournament with David or Ricky? Is David old enough to

have his own key to the house? Should Harriet change her

hairstyle?”
