benefits of animal research has contributed to an increased life expectancy of 25 years
since 1900. Although there are many illnesses today for which no cure has been found, despite
animal testing, many medical advances have depended on the use of laboratory animals. Smallpox
has been eliminated because the vaccine was tested on monkeys to guarantee its safety for
humans. Every year, three million children are vaccinated against measels, diptheria, whooping
cough, tetanus, polio adn tuberculosis. The Polio vaccine was developed in 1950 after having
tested it on monkeys. Using animals to test certain drugs is necessary to study its safety and the
effect it has on our health. When a new drug is developed, it is not wise to use it on human
beings initially as it many cause more harm than good. The problem with human experimentation
is that humans live in a non-controlled system which makes obtaining good data difficult.
Scientists use animals to study how the body works and how to diagnose, cure and prevent
disease. Animals are used because their bodies react in a similar way to that of humans, although
