Students who are getting 7 hours and 15 minutes or less of sleep each night are most likely to be suffering from sleep deprivation and almost certainly affecting their academic performance. Students who get 7 or 8 hours of sleep are said to be functionally awake but not functioning properly. This is may be due to the fact that their ability to pay attention and stay awake during class is lacking when forced to tackle the day with not enough sleep. Ari Goldberg (2001), a student, stated in a recent article that he sees other students pass out (fall asleep) all the time during class, especially in the morning classes. He himself knows that he is sleep deprived and falls asleep during his morning math class as well. The article also expressed that students who are sleep deprived are less able to learn or memorize, solve problems, and concentrate. Dr. Robert Stickgold (2001) says, “The right kind of sleep and the right amount of sleep is critical to our ability to learn. If you don’t get enough sleep or good enough sleep after learning something new, you won’t effectively integrate what you've learned into your memory”.
