when the dean of Boston University’s school of Education, Bob Dentler, forced the parents to either make Bancroft a district school or a magnet school, making families like the Divers get stuck in the middle, since a district school would force some assigned kids to attend school with their parents not even liking the idea of an open education, whereas a magnet school was likely to assign kids that were attending Bancroft to another school. The decision turned out in favor for a district school in order to assure at least the students already enrolled in Bancroft to come back the following year. However this turned out to be not the case, since kids already promised a spot at Bancroft got assigned elsewhere. Moreover, the racial issue overshadowed the long kept harmony at Bancroft, since black neighborhoods were excluded, getting angry at the school and the educational system. Instead of fighting to be accepted though, black people excluded themselves from Bancroft, saying that their children needed discipline and order to be able to survive in society. While Bancroft was teaching kids personal choice with lots of choices presented to them, black people argued that their kids would probably never face any of those choices in life and did therefore much more depend on an education that would teach them how to compete with the white kids. Moreover, black people felt the need to preserve public schools the way they were, because they were cheaper than any other school. Mak!
