The purpose of subordinate-centered communication is to allow the subordinate to maintain control and responsibility for the issue. This type of communication, where the subordinate plays an active role, takes longer than directive or leader-centered communication. However, subordinate participation is necessary when leaders are attempting to help the subordinates to develop and not simply impart directions or advice.
