The law of demand states that as price rises, the quantity demanded decreases and as price falls, the quantity demanded increases. It says that people will buy more goods at a lower price than they will at a higher price. The law of supply in the other hand states that an increase in price will lead to an increase in quantity supplied, and the lower price will lead to a decrease in quantity supplied.
An increase in the total number of students in UTP simply means that the quantity of demand for goods and services in UTP will also increase. Let us take the cafeteria for example. In the short run, they will not be able to suddenly increase the quantity of food supplied. This means that the quantity of food supplied is limited, and therefore a shortage in supply was created. Price for the food will then increase. According to the law of demand, when this happens, the quantity demanded for food at the cafeteria will decrease. Students will find other alternatives like dining out-of-campus, for example.
