Educational Attainment and Income Earnings of Women Related to the Population Growth Rate in Wisconsin
Objective
This research paper will examine the effects of both women’s educational attainment and income earnings on population growth rate in Wisconsin between years 1950 to 1990.
Theory
My theory presupposes that the population rate increase has declined because both women’s educational attainment and income earnings have been increasing. Pre women’s liberation movement of the 1960’s, women were encouraged to stay within the home by making a career of being a housewife. Naturally, this did not necessitate acquiring much education beyond what a mother could teach her daughter about being a good wife, taking care of household duties, and raising children. However, the tiresome task of home maintenance and offspring rearing yielded no salary, nor hourly wages. The husband was outside of the home unit a majority of the time earning income to support his family. Consequently, women tended to have several children, perhaps to occupy themselves and provide a sense of achievement beyond washing dishes and vacuuming while the husband was out accomplishing fulfilling task at his job. As women became further liberated, more and more ventured outside of the “oppressive” traditional family household to explore their own careers and agendas. With more women unwilling to become homemakers and raise children, the population growth rate began to decline. As each additional generation of young women watched older women having successful careers and earning income without relying on a man, an increasing number begin to take action by acquiring more education, with the ultimate goal being to enter the workforce and become self-reliant. As a result, the number of homemakers decreases, as does the number of births each year- illustrating the continued population growth rate decrease as the educational attainment and income ea...
