Who has had the greatest impact on your life?
My grandmother, (Mrs. Effiemae Hayes) has the greatest impact on my life. Mrs. Hayes was a strong willed person full of love and kindness. Her Christianity for the love of God out-weighed a lot of things she’s done and has become in life.
Mrs. Hayes is the teacher of old family morals, values, unity and respect. Born and raised in Chase City, VA and coming from a family of eleven siblings, she was one of the youngest. In those days everyone was unable to finish school.
Growing-up we’ve spent many summer vacations with my grandma in Richmond, VA. At that time she has always kept us busy with activities while she was at work. Either we were in a summer camp or spending days with my cousins or my uncle Joe. Just to name a few things my grandma did for my sister (Joy) and me. As we’ve gotten older, I find my grandma to more of a girlfriend, ear-to-listen, and shoulder to cry on long-distance. I had communication with my grandmother as if she’s my oldest sister.
It was times I needed to talk with her because, I was too scared to talk with my mother.
My grandma was an independent person until her past away from this earthly place. She has taught me things about life which no one could have known especially, a young person. As a young adult she taught us to respect our elders. As you know, “She’s been there done that.” I had been raised to appreciate the knowledge of the old wise and weary ones.
Her spirit has been instilled in me as a child and still does today. As grandma would say, “The way you carry yourself shows how you would like to be treated by others.” She did not let us go too far without learning something new about everyday life, personal appearance, manners and the Bible. She made sure our main focus was on education. And we had a goal in life set for the future.
