8 punched on IBM cards that were fed into an IBM 650 computer. The course included lessons on how to use the IBM Sorter to put together program card decks in case they were dropped on the floor. A few years later, I co-founded the Ohio School of Career Technology with a Mr. Brown in Columbus, Ohio. I taught COBOL on an IBM S/3 computer, vastly faster than the IBM 650. Programs were punched up on tiny IBM cards (tiny compared to the 8" cards for the 650).
In 1980, I quit teaching and formed a software development company for the oil and gas industry. I wrote and wrote programs in COBOL covering the whole gamut of the industry -ranging from petroleum engineering to joint interest accounting, from payroll to general ledger. I wrote, with a great deal of help from my programmers, over 3,000 COBOL programs in the 1980s, most of these programs are still in use today.
