The Internet: A blessing or a curse
There are many reasons why the Internet is so controversial. The problem with the Internet today is
the fact that anyone can access just about anything they want to from it. For example, pornography is a
big issue because children are accessing adult content so easily without anyone having to know about it.
Also, there are some websites that allow you to watch people doing drugs. A lot of this stuff seems
crazy and unbelievable, but it is true. There was a recent accident from a website like this. The website
was allowing its viewers to get high over the Internet on webcams and cheer each other on. A 20 year
old male died from a drug overdose in this situation.
The thing is right now cyber-space has no real laws that limit the actual access you have on the net.
There are some laws that make it illegal and result in consequences, but they can only go so far.
Another issue is that there is so much obscenity and violence that goes on inside online chat rooms, and
the most frightening part about it is that it is so easy for someone to trick another person with their age
and get you to meet up with them. This is very dangerous especially for children. Let’s say a 50 year
old man is online and he “instant messages” Dave. Dave is 11 and doesn’t know anything about the guy
he is talking to. The 50 year old man could tell Dave that he is 13 and Dave would believe him. That’s a
very big problem. There is no real proof or identity someone can give you online. There have been
occasions where this has happened and the two people met up. A person could be meeting someone
totally different from who they thought they were talking to online. It may not seem realistic, but there
were deaths in situations like this.
