It involves continuously learning and applying new knowledge, taking advantage of opportunities, and taking risks with the aim to help the organization be productive and effective while achieving one's career and personal goals.”(http://www.jobs.state.com)
Career development is about the future of the company, and what's more about the effective deployment and development of all employees. Career development is one of the most important means for recruiting, motivating and retaining good quality workers. Giving career opportunities is one of eleven key practices that have a huge impact on organisational performance and well being. (Purcell et al, 2003)
According to the Managing Employee Careers Survey conducted by the CIPD (2003) the five components of career development are:
Ø “career planning and support activities
Ø career information and advice
Ø developmental assignments
Ø internal job markets and job posting systems

“Management development is the process of training and educating employees to become good managers and then monitoring the progress of their managerial skills over time”

Management development includes:
· “structured informal learning: work-based methods aimed at structuring the informal learning which will always take place
· formal training courses of various kinds: from very specific courses on technical aspects of jobs to courses on wider management skills
· education: this might range from courses for (perhaps prospective) junior managers or supervisors at NVQ Level 3 to Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees.” (www.cipd.co.uk)
