UPS began to increase its jet cargo fleet. “In 1985, UPS Next Day Air service was available in all 48 states and Puerto Rico, Alaska and Hawaii were added later” (ups.com). Today, UPS operates in more than 185 countries and territories, spanning both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. “With its international service, UPS can reach over four billion people, twice the number of people who can be reached by any telephone network”.
Industry Outlook
Over the next decade, UPS will be faced with dramatic changes in order to compete with fierce competition and the fast paced market. In the past, UPS has been steadfast in meeting the demands of customers. In order to meet such demands, UPS has established a delivery fleet of “88,000 package cars, vans, tractors, and motorcycles”. For accelerated and international deliveries, UPS has assembled 268 jet aircraft, making it the 11th largest airline in the world.
In order to comfort the concerns of customers and the location of their package, UPS implemented a tracking service that enabled customers to locate their package that informed them of the expected delivery date. “To provide a regularly updated tracking service, and to help solve the logistical problems inherent in keeping track of billions of packages, UPS needs to keep technology current”(12). So every few years, it goes through a technological refresh to ensure that its drivers, loaders, and other employees are using the most up-to-date technology. (8). In its latest technological refresh, UPS implemented Bluetooth technology that enabled the wireless transfer of information. Bluetooth technology enables UPS loaders and drivers the ability to load packages without the hassle of wires. In return every package can be scanned without constant wire disconnects.
