The Objective:
So how can companies create or prepare their organization to accept and ultimately implement new and changing strategic goals? There are several theories that attempt to explain the failure of company’s strategic plans. Many critics believe that improper strategy implementation is the ultimate contributor to a successful companies demise. But what can a company do wrong, or more important, what do successful companies do right to overcome the barriers to strategic implementation? The obvious answer: they adapt and create an internal environment that is uniquely aligned to their goals and strategy.
Successful companies like Microsoft, create a successful culture by evoking their people to believe in their mission and their goals. Furthermore, successful companies give their people the tools and freedom to ensure strategy is carried out successfully. Culture and leadership are the cornerstones for a successful organization to implement a strategic plan. This paper will be elaborate on the affect of leadership and culture on implementing a strategic plan.
Corporate Culture:
Corporate culture is a broad term used to define the unique personality or character of a particular company or organization, and includes such elements as core values and beliefs, corporate ethics, and rules of behavior (4 p.420). Corporate culture can be expressed in the company's mission statement and other communications or internal processes. Culture is obviously difficult to change, and the older the culture, the more difficult it is to change. However, the key is to not to change culture because of strategy, but link culture with strategy. Senior managers get lulled into believe that a well-conceived strategy communicated to the organization equals implementation (2 p. 1). This is obviously not true and is the reason why most strategic plans fail.
