In this paper, we discuss the merger between National Bank of Commerce and Sun Trust. Section 2 gives a present description and historical evolution of each bank. Each bank’s present profile and historical highlights are detailed in this section. Section 3 explores the financial picture of each institution, including a present financial snapshot of its assets and a comparison of each bank’s key ratios to the industry. NBC’s pre-merger strengths, weaknesses, opportunity and threats (SWOT) are discussed in section 4, while section 5 proposes a post-merger configuration and product offering. The last section explores each bank’s Community Reinvestment Act activity. One main conclusion from this paper is that Memphis, despite gaining a bigger bank with extreme financial stability, will lose some character because it can no longer boast of having a Memphis Own/Home Grown bank with its main headquarters located in its downtown - a bank that is accountable because it is accessible.
