p thinking managers do all the work” (Blanchard, Zigarmi, Zigarmi 1985, 17). Then in another mentoring session, the consultant was discussing the topic of leadership styles and a more effective way to supervise. The consultant gave the following advice to his client regarding leadership:
Your leadership style is the way you supervise or work with someone. It’s how you behave over time, when you’re trying to influence the performance of others. (Blanchard, et al. 1985, 17)
Blanchard, et al defines leadership style as “how you behave when you are trying to influence the performance of someone else. Leadership style is a combination of directive and supportive behaviors” (Blanchard, et al. 1985, 46).
Four theories on leadership are discussed in this paper to illustrate the research developments on leadership, and the relationship between management and leadership. These four theories were chosen of many in order to depict the broad dimensions of management and leadership.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Leadership is a broad concept that has been studied throughout history. Volumes of research have been written on leadership forming models and theories; however, there are no applications in which an actual process for real-life is used.
The terms “leadership” and “management” are used almost synonymously, but many researchers, as well as others, have given specific meanings to each. It seems as though one can be a manager, but not necessarily a leader, and one cannot be a leader without being somewhat of a manager.
A further suggestion after reading the myriad of information would be to use roles to determine which term to use, and a need for an extensive knowledge of the organization in order to substantiate the difference, or if they are one in the same.
