age counselors would be out of a job. Every team member’s insights should be properly collected and molded into one conjoined, well-rounded project. Any project relating to a group ends up into a form of negotiation procedures in which a solution will be derived from compromise rather than oppression by dominating ideas or procedures. We should then look at ways of handling conflict once it arises and use it productively.

Proper conduct and procedures should be used when working in groups. Most of these procedures resemble ideas that are common knowledge. One must respect the other members for who they are as human beings. Once conflict arises, there is no need to take it personally. It is human nature. Not all conflict is bad. Conflict can be used constructively by promoting change or growth within a system, resolving diversity of opinion issues, promoting unity of group members or enhancing overall team productivity (Thompson, pg 238). Each member has their own voice and they should be given an adequate chance to express their own opinions. Every team member has to learn to work together and to especially learn to take criticism constructively.

One important aspect that needs to be made clear is that each member needs to think of what is best for the team as a whole and not to focus on individual wants. There should be some common goal or destination that must be shared by each member. “Shared goals do not imply homogeneous thinking, but they do require everyone to share a vision.” (Thompson, pg. 220) Highly competitive settings and lack of common ground prevents anything from being accomplished. Think of it as if a group project resembles a two-seated bicycle and the two riders are the team members. If their goal is to ride the bike to the finish line down the street, how can they move if both riders peddle in opposite directions?
