The group is developing products in the SAN (storage area network) markets and in the area of consumer digital video recorders and Internet TV. Seagate storage products include a broad range of disc drives in capacities ranging from 4GB to 73GB. For example, the Barracuda ATA and U series can support to 15GB. In addition, this comprehensive line of disc drives includes products for the price-sensitive desktop PC market, higher performance PC, and workstation drives. Seagate removable storage solutions offer a broad line of tape solutions for backup on networks and multi-user systems (seagate.com).
Alan Shugart has been credited with inventing the floppy drive while working for IBM in the late 1960’s. During the late 1970’s he started his own company called Shugart and Associates to manufacture floppy drives (Robinson 349). Shugart wanted to implement microprocessors and floppy drives for microcomputer systems at the time, but his financial backers of the “new” Shugart and Associates decided that he manufacture straight floppy drives only. He was forced to quit Shugart and Associates in 1974, right before they introduced mini diskette drives. Since Shugart was forced to leave he attempted to legally try to remove his name from the company, but failed (354).
In 1979, after 5 years of consulting, Shugart with Finis Conner founded Shugart technology. To avoid confusion on shipping docks Shugart Technology changed its name to Seagate Technology. Throughout the years, Seagate’s accomplishments include the industry’s first 5.25-inch hard drive in 1980. In 1992, they introduced the first 7200-rpm disc drive.
