Establishment
Although Coca-Cola Enterprises was established in 1986, the actual roots of this business extend back to 1899 when the first Coca-Cola bottling operation began. The first Coca-Cola product was created in 1886 when a man with a migraine asked the soda jerk to mix-up a tonic comprised of Coca-Cola syrup and carbonated water, after which the tonic was advertised as a “brain and nerve tonic” in drugstores. (Coca-Cola History, 1). The first year's gross sales of the tonic were only $50, which was not even enough to cover the cost of the advertising (roughly $73.96). When the first Coca-Cola bottling franchise began operations in 1901, it operated under the ownership of Benjamin F. Thomas and James F. Johnston, grandfather of CCE’s former Chairman of the Board, Summerfield K. Johnston, Jr.
Products and Services
CCE boasts ownership of the number one soft drink product in the soft drink industry, Coca-Cola. Other products distributed by CCE include Barq’s Root Beer, Sprite; Minute Maid non-carbonated drinks including orange juice, lemon-aid, and fruit punch; and the company’s newest creation, Vanilla Coke.
