The first sister, Ko, is a selfish, bratty girl who does not appreciate the good things in life until after they are gone. The other sister, Yoko, is a very strict teenager who is very bossy. Their brother is a man who is trying to earn respect by joining the army, and their mother is a woman who is very respectful and traditional. This story takes place in 1945 in Korea where the country is at war. This family is torn apart by the war and needs to find a safe place to live. The title of this story is significant because the bamboo grove is where this family lived and now they know they must move so far away from it leaving behind all their memories.
