Journal Response: Salvation – By: Langston Hughes

This reading talks about a young boy struggling in church to find Jesus. It starts out with members of a church with there young children at a ceremony to have there sins taken away and to find Jesus. The boy is told by his aunt that he will see a light and something will happen inside him when Jesus calls. She tells him when this happens that Jesus will be in his life and God will be with him forever. One by one the group of children rise to there feet because they seem to see Jesus. It gets down to just the boy and one other. He starts to get nervous because he does not feel anything and is being pressured. He is all alone and decides he should just go up anyway even though he doesn’t see the light so he will maybe save further trouble or disappointment from the others. When he arises everyone is happy and proud. However that night when he goes home he is full of sadness and cries. His family thinks he is crying because he saw Jesus and is happy when inside he is crying because he had lied and deceived the church and all the members. He feels upset that he didn’t see Jesus and doesn’t believe in Jesus after this tragedy because he didn’t come and help him.
