o ask Dolores for a kiss because Dolores steps back in order to “give” Lorenzo her lips. It is evident that the embrace between Lorenzo and Dolores is one that is shared. Lorenzo can be seen here as caring, and nurturing. Their embrace is soft, very different from the that of Artemio and Regina.
“Regina’s slanted eyes glowed, half open, like luminous black scars...He breathed: a bedroom of blouses and starched skirts, quinces cut open on the walnut table, an extinguished bedside lamp. Closer to him, the briny smell of the moistened woman. Her nails made a cat’s claw sound on the sheets...Her nipples trembled joyfully when he touched them with his lips” (Cruz 58). The diction of Fuentes here is very different as compared to the one used to describe Lorenzo’s affair. The words used here are stronger, more hurtful. Fuentes describes Regina’s eyes as “black scars.” This is different from the “moist green eyes” he described for Dolores. Regina’s eyes are scars which permanently remind Artemio of the damage he once caused to his lover. To be able to gaze into scarred eyes and still love takes a man who is grim in nature.
