It is a clear beginning of a transformation when Darcy realizes that though he previous could not find a single pleasing feature in Elizabeth, he has since begun to appreciate her for intelligence and beauty in her dark eyes. In fact, he had become to view her figure as “light and pleasing.” Equally important however, Darcy begins to look beyond looks to learn more of Elizabeth‘s intelligence in conversation. He purposefully eavesdrops on her conversation in an effort to hear her speak.
Unfortunately for Darcy, this only further infuriates Elizabeth who immediately assumes he is doing so only in order to taunt her further with criticizing remarks. It is this game of cat and mouse that will drag on through various events strengthening Darcy’s love as well as Elizabeth’s distaste. She holds a unknown power over Darcy who keeps his desire for Elizabeth concealed all the while. He can not fathom how a woman of such background, family, upbringing, and income should be the object of his affections. He repeatedly tells himself such a relationship is not only unworthy of his thought, but foolish as well. His reputation and name is not worth the frolic with a girl whom his emotions towards are fleeting at best.
