al freedoms were completely non-existent. There were no laws separating right from wrong, which resulted in easy control by the government and kept the entire population in fear.
One reason to keep the people in fear is so that they restrict themselves from doing certain things that are not tolerable. Essentially, the Party is enforcing self-censorship, which soon becomes automatic after the people have "trained" themselves to do it so frequently. In order to keep the people of Oceania in conformity with the desires of the governing Inner Party, the Party must be able to control particular aspects of people’s lives. Communication, for one, is controlled for the benefit of the nation. By controlling their communication, you can control the words by which these people use to express themselves. Therefore, by controlling their language, you can control their thoughts. Newspeak is the Party’s modified version of language that is enforced upon the people in order to limit their expression. Syme, a comrade of Winston, reveals that he supports the Party’s decision in creating Newspeak. "It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction or words." Syme continues on, "don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will
be no words in which to express it" (Orwell, 45-46). In essence, they are becoming brainwashed by the Party to use Newspeak, which will not allow them to fully express themselves. Syme understands their purpose for doing such a thing, and explains to Winston that Newspeak is designed to control the personal beliefs of the citizens by limiting their form of expression.
Thought Police are also used to prevent thoughts that oppose the nation. "How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time" (Orwell, 4). Thr...
